FREE SLURPEE DAY!

HUZZAH!

“In appreciation of our loyal customer base, we started giving away Slurpee drinks on our 75th birthday in 2002,” said Jay Wilkins, 7-Eleven brand manager for Slurpee and Big Gulp® fountain drinks.  “Customers thanked us, and we’ve been doing it ever since.  Now July 11, or 7-Eleven Day, has become Customer Appreciation Day or try-your-favorite-Slurpee-on-us day.”

This time last year, all the 7-11’s were Simpsonized. Remember that?

This year, it’s back to slurpees.

but check this out too:

to celebrate National Hot Dog Month in July, participating 7-Eleven stores are offering a quarter-pound Big Bite hot dog and Big Gulp® drink for just $1.99 throughout the entire month, a real value at a time when consumers’ incomes may be stretched dog-gone thin.

Tis ashame there are only TWO 7-11’s in all of New York. To my knowledge. That won’t stop me from gettin up early to get my free slurpee!
(Though the line in the Times Square 7-11 is gonna be KILLER.)

Celebrity Mario Lopez gives away Free Hot Dogs

posted by Kane

I know that sounds like some kind of joke subject, a euphemism if you will, but its true. I was walking around Times Square today, and saw this:

That’s right folks. The Oscar Meyer Weiner mobile was parked right across from the Minskoff Theatre.

I had never seen the wiener-mobile up close, so I had to take a closer look. Even if they weren’t giving anything away, the chance to be upclose to a legend was too good to pass up!

I crossed the street, and there was an assortment of delicious condiments (and the mini-wiener):

I don’t even like mustard.

They were proclaiming free hot dogs! More excitement! Though surely the line would be too long. Still, I continued closer to the wiener-mobile to see it up close. Just then, Mr. Ketchup says “Mario Lopez is giving away free hot dogs!”

What?

“Seriously.”

It wasn’t a joke, or a shameless ploy from a street promotions guy for attention. Celebrity Mario Lopez was in fact there. Giving away hot dogs. In Times Square.

So I walked closer amidst the crowds of visitors to see for myself.

And sure enough, there he was. Right beside the Holy Wiener-mobile.

See:

Dhfffenxor3ahnadbimnyz-mediumSo sure enough, Mr. Ketchup was right. There he was. Helpin’ to cook hot dogs, and then giving them away to people. And talking about chorus line. (Which he is currently starring in on the Broadway.)
And making video blogs.
I’m really not sure what those things all have in common.

All that matters to me is that I got a free hot dog. The line wasn’t too bad after all. And some fun pics of celebrity Mario Lopez.

Mosaic Me, Baby!

posted by Kane

Remember those really cool photomosaics that were all the rage a few years back? You know, the pictures of famous movie or cartoon characters or scenes of the beach or whatever that looked fine from far away, but when you got closer, you noticed that the pixels of the photo were actually made up of several tiny pictures. I used to think those were some darn cool things, especially the Disney ones. Like, you’d have a picture of Mickey Mouse, made of hundreds of tiny pictures of Mickey Mouse.

NickyNax found a program for the MAC that can do that for you.

[I] stumbled across a program called MacOSaiX that makes photo mosaics for you. You just tell it what picture you want the final product to look like and what pictures to use in the mosaic and it does all the work itself while you sit back and watch. It was quite fascinating to watch as the pieces fell into place and the final image began to emerge.

He took a picture of himself from a recent cruise vacation, and using 1600 pictures from that cruise, made a mosaic. Here’s the starter picture:

And check out the result after the jump.

FREE ICE CREAM DAY!!!

posted by Kane

Important news flash:

I hope this isn’t too late… but tomorrow (or today… or yesterday depending on how often u read this blog… maybe u should read it more often… to make sure you don’t miss out on anything awesome…) is FREE CONE DAY!!!

That’s right folks. Ben and Jerry’s will be giving out free ice cream! WOOOO!

Free Cone Day! 2008

To say I’m excited would be an understatement.

from the facebook invitation:

Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day is an annual event, held in late April or early May, in which Ben and Jerry’s scoop shops give out free ice cream cones all day. Over one million free cones are given away each year. Charitable organizations are often present at the stores each year and enjoy a significant amount of fundraising success.
The first Free Cone Day was held on May 5, 1979. It was done by Ben and Jerry as a customer and staff appreciation event for the one year anniversary of their ice cream store’s opening, and has continued ever since.
30th annual Free Cone day is Tuesday, April 29th

This is where you can find me. Sometime around 4PM or so, methinks. I hope it won’t be too late.

Find your local scoop shop.

to do list NYC: earth day edition

posted by Kane

from the “official website for central park:”

Earth Day Celebration in Central Park
12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Rumsey Playfield

The Central Park Conservancy and the Green Apple Festival will host an Earth Day Celebration for families at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park on Sunday, April 20th from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Pack a picnic and bring a blanket as we celebrate with music, crafts, and activities for all.

It sounds like it a lot of fun is planned. Free concerts (the Bacon Brothers!!!), yummy snacks (eco-friendly!!!), tips on making a vegetable garden (free seeds!!!), and tree tours and park ranger lectures!!! Okay, so maybe the lectures don’t sound that exciting, but you have to imagine all the hippie types walking around central park eating their organic cookies. That’s worth the price of admission! (price of admission is FREE, btw.)

There will also be a very exciting art project, called Peace x Piece Live 2008. It’s a large mural, brainchild of Paul and Mark Kostabi, and you can be a part of it by helping to contribute your own 6″ canvas. All material will be provided. It’s exciting when people gather together to create something.

All events are free and open to the public. Rain or shine.  Enter the Park at 72nd Street and 5th Avenue. Link.

Also, if you haven’t gotten around to it, Sunday is the final day of NY Comic Con. I didn’t get to go this year, though I didn’t have much interest, since there wasn’t a LOST panel. (That woulda sealed the deal fellas. You want CTA at your event, put a LOST panel. I’ll be there!) We do have a few correspondents who attended, and I’ll see about getting them to provide some thoughts and pictures in the coming days. But if you’ve got a yearning for some old fashioned geekfest, tomorrow is the last day. Sunday is hailed as Kid’s Day. 10-5, tickets for Sunday only available at the door for $40. Link.
