FREE ICE CREAM DAY!!!

posted by Kane

Important news flash:

I hope this isn’t too late… but tomorrow (or today… or yesterday depending on how often u read this blog… maybe u should read it more often… to make sure you don’t miss out on anything awesome…) is FREE CONE DAY!!!

That’s right folks. Ben and Jerry’s will be giving out free ice cream! WOOOO!

Free Cone Day! 2008

To say I’m excited would be an understatement.

from the facebook invitation:

Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day is an annual event, held in late April or early May, in which Ben and Jerry’s scoop shops give out free ice cream cones all day. Over one million free cones are given away each year. Charitable organizations are often present at the stores each year and enjoy a significant amount of fundraising success.
The first Free Cone Day was held on May 5, 1979. It was done by Ben and Jerry as a customer and staff appreciation event for the one year anniversary of their ice cream store’s opening, and has continued ever since.
30th annual Free Cone day is Tuesday, April 29th

This is where you can find me. Sometime around 4PM or so, methinks. I hope it won’t be too late.

Find your local scoop shop.

Super Real Mario = Creepy!

posted by Kane

The folks at pixeloo have done some really great work having fun with photoshop and come out with a series of what some famous animated characters would look like “in real life.”

Check out Mario

I know. Creepy. But somehow, exactly as i imagined it.

Also check out:
Homer
Jessica Rabbit (note to readers… yes, I accidentally wrote “jessica simpson” and deleted it and went to fix it, then accidentally wrote “jessica simpson” AGAIN. Just thought you all would like to know that.)

It’s Greek to me!

posted by boy

If there was a country that I’d have to put as the picture for ‘pack rat’ in the dictionary… Greece would be it!

I says,”greece, I understand that you have so much history and you don’t want to forget where you’ve come from…

but damn, at some point please, clean up your mess. pick up after yourself.

At least make some room to walk”

the classical BC era greece is fine with all its rubble and stuff, but do i really need to see all the rubble tha you have left over from some random restaurant that didn’t work out in 1972?

they should just level it all out, classic greece and all, and just make a whole new thing with lots of flourescent lights and postmodern futurism and flying discs.

ok, all done.

ps, in Greece, they don’t believe in Pigeons. Instead, they have dogs.

For reals…

On The Scene: Earth DAy in Central Park

posted by Kane

Since I mentioned it in a previous post, I went to Central Park today to check out the Earth Day Events. I took a lot of pictures, and you can see the gallery after the jump.

But first, some highlights.

A good amount of people were in attendance. In fact, Starbucks had set up a tent, giving out free coffee, and the line for the free coffee was always quite long. Another exhibit, sponsored by burt’s bees, also had a long wait. Who knew conservation could be so appealing?

I was on the lookout for littering. Cuz irony is my thing.

But overall, it was quite a successful event. Nothing seemed too preachy, there was a nice laid back feel, the weather was good, and there was actually a lot of good fun activities and plenty of giveaways. I got lots of free seeds! In fact, the seeds were “embedded” into the paper of the companies that sponsored the event! So I can plant a postcard. And in two weeks time, smell the lilies. Or whatever grows. I also got a FREE 16 dollar book about pine trees! HUZZAH! I think I might document the growth of one of the seed packs, so be sure to check back for that. It will be exciting, since the seeds are for a giant redwood tree. For realzies.

And the highlight of the event for me (besides free Starbucks, of course) was getting to paint a piece of a giant conservation inspired mural. Completely made out of eco-safe materials. Of course, I decided to make a statement about just how cool saving the earth can be:

Return of Marvel/DC!!!

posted by Kane

Yesterday, at the NYComicCon, ItsJustSomeRandomGuy premiered the first episode of season two of Marvel/DC. I’ve been following it ever since the first episode. If you are not aware of it, it started off as a simple parody of the mac vs PC commercials. You know those commercials, the "hello. I’m a mac." "and, I’m a PC." You know? Sure. There was a while there that there were a LOT of parodies going around the interweb, and this is one that really caught on. As the popularity grew, it expanded into including many characters and FULL storylines. And now they are BACK.

Watch episode one after the jump…

Shakespeare’s Pulp Fiction

posted by Kane

ceruleanst gives us two passages of William Shakespeare’s Pulp Fiction:

J: And know’st thou what the French name cottage pie?
V: Say they not cottage pie, in their own tongue?
J: But nay, their tongues, for speech and taste alike
Are strange to ours, with their own history:
Gaul knoweth not a cottage from a house.
V: What say they then, pray?
J: Hachis Parmentier.

J: Then hearken to my words and answer them!
Describe to me Marsellus Wallace!
B: What?
JULES presses his knife to BRETT’s throat
J: Speak ‘What’ again! Thou cur, cry ‘What’ again!
I dare thee utter ‘What’ again but once!
I dare thee twice and spit upon thy name!
Now, paint for me a portraiture in words,
If thou hast any in thy head but ‘What’,
Of Marsellus Wallace!

to do list NYC: earth day edition

posted by Kane

from the “official website for central park:”

Earth Day Celebration in Central Park
12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Rumsey Playfield

The Central Park Conservancy and the Green Apple Festival will host an Earth Day Celebration for families at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park on Sunday, April 20th from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Pack a picnic and bring a blanket as we celebrate with music, crafts, and activities for all.

It sounds like it a lot of fun is planned. Free concerts (the Bacon Brothers!!!), yummy snacks (eco-friendly!!!), tips on making a vegetable garden (free seeds!!!), and tree tours and park ranger lectures!!! Okay, so maybe the lectures don’t sound that exciting, but you have to imagine all the hippie types walking around central park eating their organic cookies. That’s worth the price of admission! (price of admission is FREE, btw.)

There will also be a very exciting art project, called Peace x Piece Live 2008. It’s a large mural, brainchild of Paul and Mark Kostabi, and you can be a part of it by helping to contribute your own 6″ canvas. All material will be provided. It’s exciting when people gather together to create something.

All events are free and open to the public. Rain or shine.  Enter the Park at 72nd Street and 5th Avenue. Link.

Also, if you haven’t gotten around to it, Sunday is the final day of NY Comic Con. I didn’t get to go this year, though I didn’t have much interest, since there wasn’t a LOST panel. (That woulda sealed the deal fellas. You want CTA at your event, put a LOST panel. I’ll be there!) We do have a few correspondents who attended, and I’ll see about getting them to provide some thoughts and pictures in the coming days. But if you’ve got a yearning for some old fashioned geekfest, tomorrow is the last day. Sunday is hailed as Kid’s Day. 10-5, tickets for Sunday only available at the door for $40. Link.

Super Mario Bros theme performed by an RC car on a row of liquid-filled bottles

posted by Kane

I must confess my undying fascination for the amazingly creative things people do to show there love for Super Mario Bros. The video game was certainly an important part of my adolescence, and judging by the amount of fan-created work inspired by the game out there on the internets, it must have been important to many others too.

I suppose that means you can expect to see a lot of examples here.

Here is the most recent, for starters.

This smart kid seems to have filled several bottles (can’t be beer… that kid is young… alcohol is for adults… right) with liquid, attached a bell to an RC car, and the rest is magical. Link.
